OpenAI assembled a Fields-Medal mathematician council to decide how to tell the world its AI solved 100+ open problems

“Einstein’s old house now has a committee deciding which AI theorems the public is allowed to see.”

The Story

After its internal model reportedly resolved more than 100 long-standing math problems (and the recent Navier-Stokes controversy), OpenAI helped stand up an independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence (AGMAI) of nine elite mathematicians—including Fields Medalists Timothy Gowers and Martin Hairer plus Edward Witten—hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study. The unpaid group will advise on significance, release timing, and academic standards but has no power over OpenAI’s research pace.

Why It Matters

Mathematics, one of the last human-only temples, now has a celebrity human overlay committee because the AI is producing theorems faster than the field can metabolize them. Identity, institutions, and the strange future of discovery.
