Oxford’s Bodleian Library is feeding OpenAI 19th-century dissertations and 16th-century ballads
“The Bodleian just let ChatGPT eat 10,000 Tudor street songs.”
The Story
Internal documents show OpenAI has digitized Bodleian material—including 125,000 pages of historical dissertations and a collection of 10,000 16th-century broadside ballads—and used it to populate its training set. Oxford framed the 2025 partnership as making texts more available to researchers; staff have raised reputational-risk concerns. The university says the volume is modest and out-of-copyright. An “Ask the Bod” chatbot has been discussed.
Why It Matters
One of the world’s great libraries is quietly becoming training data. Culture, art, institutions, and the sacred object of the book colliding with model hunger.
