Tesla workers balk at motion-capturing themselves to train Optimus robots built to replace them
“They’re taping cameras to workers so the robots can learn the job that will fire them.”
The Story
Tesla has shifted Fremont production toward Optimus (hundreds of units per week, targeting 1,000+ by year-end) and initially had factory workers wear camera/mocap suits to generate imitation-learning data. Workers complained they were training the robots designed to replace them; some reported injuries from the physical demands. Tesla moved data collection to dedicated “training hubs.” Hands with 100+ tiny parts remain a manufacturing bottleneck.
Why It Matters
Humans as disposable training data for their own obsolescence, in a real factory, with real suits and real pushback. Work, identity, and builders colliding with humanoid robots.
