The U.S. and Russia deleted “a human must look at the target

“They turned the cameras off, then took the human out of the targeting loop.”

The Story

In closed-door Geneva talks this month, U.S. and Russian delegations spent ~15 hours on the last day stripping a UN lethal-autonomous-weapons draft: out went requirements that systems be “predictable” and “reliable,” ethical considerations, and a clause that humans review AI-selected targets before a strike. Cameras were off; civil-society observers were asked to leave. The two legal teams were nearly twice the size of any other country’s.

Why It Matters

Not generic killer-robot punditry. A specific night in a windowless room where two superpowers used lawyers as a delete key. The strange future is a treaty that almost existed, then didn’t, because the humans left the room.
