Religious scholars left Anthropic dinners stunned by how the lab talks about Claude

“They invited rabbis to teach the chatbot morals. The rabbis noticed they were talking about a person.”

The Story

Anthropic hosted Jewish, Catholic, Sikh, evangelical, Ubuntu and other thinkers at tasting-menu dinners to help shape Claude’s constitution. A rabbi said the room related to Claude like a conscious being; Christopher Olah said he is genuinely uncertain whether models are conscious.

Why It Matters

The lab asks clergy to baptize a product, then talks as though it may already have an inner life.
