California banned the robo-boss from firing you

“California just made it illegal for the algorithm to fire you by itself. A human has to look you in the eye.”

The Story

On September 30, Newsom signed a first-in-the-nation ban on employers relying solely on automated systems to fire or discipline workers; a human must review the action and tell the worker. Related bills require notice if AI caused a mass layoff, ban bathroom biometric surveillance, and prevent lawyers from fully handing core legal work to AI.

Why It Matters

The state has written into law that a machine cannot be the final word on whether you still have a job.
